Writing in Kindergarten!
Discuss and figure out a sentence with your child to write. At times, help him/her sound out the words, but please do not write or spell for him/her. Over time you will see your child’s writing progress from stage to stage. Encourage your child to recall sight words that he/she should be able to spell correctly. After the sentence is written, your child may draw a picture that represents the sentence written. Below are examples of what your child’s writing may look like. All of these forms are acceptable:
A b wt to the frm. A boy wnt to the farm.
(A boy went to the farm.)
The sight words should be spelled correctly in the sentences since they are required to be recognized and spelled correctly. The rest of the words should be spelled just by the sounds the student hears and not spelled correctly.
**By the end of kindergarten we want students to be able to write 3-6 sentences about a given topic.
