ABC’s of Kindergarten
Attendance and Absences: Students are required to be in school each day we are in session, unless of an illness or some other important event. Upon returning to school please provide a note explaining the reason for your child’s absences. You may call the school to notify why they are not present or e-mail me on the day they are absent.
Birthdays: Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If your child wishes, he/she may bring a treat for the class during lunch time. We will celebrate summer birthdays during the last few weeks of school.
Conferences: You will receive your child’s report card at our only schedule conference in October. We will discuss your child's accomplishments, strengths and overall progress. Please feel free to schedule additional conferences at any time throughout the year if the need arises
Dress: Kindergartners are involved in activities that require jumping, running, climbing, and the like. Tennis shoes are necessary for P.E. days. In class, students will be painting, using markers, using glue, working with play dough, and other ‘messy’ stuff. Our dress code states that spaghetti strap dresses and shirts are not allowed. Please select clothing that is both comfortable and appropriate for these activities.
E-mail: You can contact me via my email address: [email protected] I will check my email on a daily basis. If you need to discuss something urgently, please call me at school instead.
Field Trips: We take several educational field trips during the year. A permission slip will be required anytime that we will be taking a bus for a field trip. If we do not receive a permission slip, your child will not be allowed to go with the class.
Good Behavior: We are working very hard on the rules and what we need to do to help us be able to learn best. Please be patient with your child as they learn the rules. If you could discuss with them what our rules are and how important it is to follow them, it would really mean a lot to your child to hear it from you.
Handwriting: Please practice handwriting with your child. Please review with your child that his or her first and last names start with a capital letter and all the other letters are over case. Many students in Kindergarten write their names in all capital letters. The more you practice at home, the easier it will be for them to remember.
Immunizations: All students must be immunized against certain diseases or must present a statement that the student should not be immunized. Proof of immunizations must be presented to the school within 30 days of enrollment
Juice and Snack: At the Beginning of each month please send in a snack for the class to share. (25 Students) We will have a snack at the end of the day since we eat lunch so early in the day. On Friday's we will have juice with our snack. Please let me know if there is anything your child is allergic to so I can provide an alternative snack.
Kindergarten: Kindergarten is a special time for your child. I want to make this experience the best possible. " I won't believe half the things they say about you, if you won't believe half the things they say about me!" :)
Lunch: The cost of lunch is $2.15. Our lunchtime is 11:10 A.M. - 11:40 A.M. You are welcome to come and eat with your child or bring a lunch to him/her. Please sign in at the office and wait for us in the cafeteria. Make sure you complete the necessary forms for food allergies. These forms must be filled out and turned into school before your child can buy lunch.
Manipulatives: We will use a lot of different manipulatives with our Math Investigations. If you can donate any small items that we can use for counting or sorting it would be greatly appreciated.
Newsletters: These Newsletters will be posted online. http://schools.cms.k12.nc.us/rivergateES/Pages/Kindergarten.aspx The newsletters will contain upcoming events and projects. Please make sure you read these letters because many times throughout the year we will be asking for items to be sent in from home.
Open: Please open your child’s book bag and binder/ folder each night. Please return any forms that are in the pocket on the left side.
PTA: We encourage joining the River Gate Elementary PTA and attending the meetings. The PTA contributes significantly to the school both financially and personally through the volunteer program. Support the PTA, it supports you! The cost is $5. PTA was generous and bought a River Gate Gator T-shirt for every student this year.
Questions: Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s education. I will make every effort to meet with you and discuss your concerns.
Read: It is important that your child see you read and also be read to. Studies show that the more they read and are read to, the better they will do in reading and most other areas of school.
Star Student: Each week I will pick a star student of our class. To be chosen for the star of the week a student must follow the school and class rules. Every student will have the chance to be our star.
Transportation: Please send all transportation changes in writing in your child's GATOR notebook. I am required to send your child home in their usual way unless I have a written note.
Understanding: Please be understanding. Having 22 five year olds all day long can get very hectic. I do my very best to attend to each child’s individual needs and wants. If you ever have any questions or concerns please e-mail me or write a note. Thanks!!!!!!!!
Volunteers: Parent Involvement is needed and appreciated. Anyone in the family is encouraged to volunteer. Before coming to school and volunteering you need to go to CMS website and fill out an application on line. http://volunteer.cms.k12.nc.us
Webpage: Our class has a website which can be accessed. Check in regularly to find information about curriculum, special events and school news.
X-tra Clothes: Accidents happen in Kindergarten so please make sure you send in an extra pair of underwear, shorts, socks and a shirt for your son or daughter. If they use their extra clothes please make sure you replace them for the next day. This really helps us so we don’t have to call you and have you come to school.
You: You can help to make your child feel successful this year by doing some of the following: Reading to your child is the single most important thing you can do. It encourages them to become good readers. Another important way to help your child is to discuss the school day with them. Ask questions like, “What was your favorite thing you learned today?”, “What did you work the hardest on?”, or “What are you getting better at?”. These questions cause children to reflect on their learning which in turn helps them remember new information. Don’t let them tell you “nothing.” Ask your child about centers, special area classes, writing, reading, or math work.
Zzzzz...: Our school day begins at 8:30. Please make sure your child has a reasonable bedtime so that he/she will be at his/her best!
